New Years Eve in New York
You know how every New Years is hyped up to be the GREATEST NIGHT EVER... But almost every time, it's not as great as you had expected or hoped?
Well of all places to Hype up New Years, New York is the most hype I've ever experienced. Even the shop assistants that serve us are asking what our plans are for the evening.
We didn't plan to do the Times Square thing. (Too cold, too complicated, not enough food options or toilets.) So the fact that we actually walked through hoards of people in Times Square at 11am, and lived to tell the tale, was quite remarkable. We even did m&m world and the Disney store! (Jana, I added a pic of the Peter Pan section for you!)
The rest of the day was spent on 5th avenue. It was on my bucket list to have breakfast at Tiffanys. So I purposefully STARVED myself until we reached the Tiffanys store, where I ran around looking for a food cart. The only options were a hot dog or a pretzel. I got a pretzel, thinking of Aunty Ann's sweet glazed pretzels, but instead got one with rocks of salt cemented into the dough. That was a nasty shock. This was around 1:30pm. So I don't know if it really counts as "breakfast"...
The rest of the day consisted of window shopping at a lot of high end stores that I had heard about from Friends (the TV show), so a lot of the stores were a surprise, as to what was inside. Bloomingdales, Saks, Macy's, Fao Scwartz and Dylan's Candy Land to name a few..
In Barneys, I was admiring the handbags and found a cheaper looking one and looked at the price tag. There was no decimal point and I asked what Shane thought.. He said "maybe it was made in 1995!" We quickly left the area and went up to the 9th floor to view the "electric holiday" display, which was basically a Disney trip down memory lane for those who lived in the 50s and felt nostalgic at the thought of buying a replica of the 1950s Mickey Mouse pencil sharpener for $150.
We stumbled upon a restaurant attached to Barneys called Fred's and even that looked extremely upper class. Prices weren't too bad and we were starving for lunch (at 3:30pm) so we ate there. (Spinach filled ravioli with sage butter and Parmesan cheese for me and a margherita pizza for Shane.)
After lunch we headed to a few more stores on the list.. And then wandered through Central Park. It was such a beautiful place. Trees lit, a tiny amount of snow still clinging to the leafy ground. We watched the ice skaters and were thankful to be on higher ground. Loved walking hand in gloved hand all day and taking our time with everything. New Years tonight? Who cares!
Once we caught the subway back into the ghetto, we picked up some Doritos and salsa.. As well as some party drinks- Trop50 and Sierra Mist (orange juice and lemonade). Back in our hostel, eating the m&ms and gummy candy we scored today, watching Seinfeld and 3 hours of Family Guy before the New Years Celebrations come on at 11pm. Apparently the Spice Girls are playing in Times Square tonight! Maybe we will stay awake long enough to watch the ball drop.
So far, this New Years has been the best in a long time. Hanging out in our crappy hotel room (which, I forgot to mention, is BOILING because the oil heater is too hot for us to turn it off!) So, where was I?
Sitting in our underwear, eating Doritos and drinking my mixed O.J and lemonade, getting mushy thinking about the beautiful moments we shared in Central Park...
This is what dreams are made of.
Screw the ball drop.
Best New Years.
Hope you all had a wonderful evening yourselves - wherever you are in the world.
